Letterman Eat Your Heart Out

My top 10 will make you healthier, slimmer,  and younger.

Did that little tease catch your attention? I hope so. I gave a talk yesterday to CorVel insurance group and promised I would have on the blog today my top 10 ways to lose weight. This information was basically culled from my four favorite weight loss books. To be honest the authors of those books would be slightly offended that I called their works simply diet books. In reality The Zone Diet The Paleo Diet, The Primal Bluprint, and my favorite the The Paleo Solution by Rob Wolff are basically life-changing philosophies wrapped in good science with excellent presentation. My job as a doctor and a healer is to help carry their message forward. What is their message? How to be healthier, stronger, happier,  and sexier. Oh and by the way, live longer. It is interesting to note that not one of these men is a medical doctor and yet they are improving and saving more lives than most medical doctors I know. I count myself proud to stand with this small  group whose powerful message is the best hope for  better health .We only have to visit a mall or ball game to know  that the health of the US is in dire straits. This is where the music fades in for “industrial disease”by the aforementioned band with great songs from the  70′s and 80′s. Where was I?  Oh yeah,  the top 10 best ways to lose weight. Drum roll… the all new ZAPP diet-  The Zoney, Atkinish, Paleo, Primal-like diet. Yes, I know Atkins was an M.D. but I feel his original work, while ground breaking, had many flaws.

Here we go:

1. NO GRAINS The biggest primal statement.  (More on this later)

2. NO CARBS Other than vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds.

3. NO TRANS FATS This means hydrogenated as well as partially hydrogenated fats.

4. AVOID DAIRY. Exceptions: whey  protein, cottage cheese, and cured cheeses. No milk- milk is for baby cows.  Everyone is lactose intolerant. ( more on this later)

5. ELIMINATE REFINED SUGARS . And while you’re at it, eliminate fake sugars as well. Aspartame (Equal, Nutri-Sweet) is changed by the body into formaldehyde- the same stuff frogs swam in during high school biology. Get rid of high fructose corn syrup. All of these are extremely inflammatory to the body and accelerate aging.

6. SHOOT FOR 1500-2000 CALORIES PER DAY.

7. INCREASE THE AMOUNT OF PROTEIN AND GOOD  FAT IN YOUR DIET (Olive oil, coconut oil, fish oil)

8. INCREASE YOUR ZZZZZ’S. If you think you can get by on only 5-6 hours of sleep you should know you increase your chance of obesity by 70%. Cortisol, the stress hormone, is lowered  best by good sleep as well. A 2 for 1 benefit.

9. EXERCISE. Much more on this later.

10. DID YOU THINK IT WOULD BE THAT EASY? Check out my next blog for the secret of natural cheaters to lose weight.

Catch you on the flip side skinny.

Hi Dr. J. Thanks for the blog! I have a question for you about Stevia Extract and whether or not it is good for you? I have substituted it in my morning coffee and wonder where it comes from and if I should have it in powder form or liquid form? Your thoughts please as this, I believe will impact many people who want to cut out sugar, but are still addicted to it and afraid to cut it out completely

    Tracey,
Good question! At least you are not asking about artificial sweeteners which are truly dangerous. As always, anything natural beats artificial hands down. Stevia comes from a shrub in South America and has been used for hundreds of years as a sweetener. It has a glycemix index of 0-1 which means a very low insulin response. That equals less fat on your belly! As for the powder vs liquid- it’s a matter of personal preference. Remember- stevia is 300 times sweeter than sugar so a little goes a long way.
