As I mentioned in my last post, I was going to delve deeper into the deadly attack of grains. Someone got it in their head several thousand years ago that it was easier to plant corn next to the cave than go out and kill a mastodon. Now, thanks to that lazy hunter- gatherer cousin of ours, we are now the fattest people on the planet. 70% of our population is overweight, obese or morbidly obese, meaning they have a body mass index (BMI) of 25 or greater. How could this have happened? We have the most productive work force in the world. Yet we have more heart disease, diabetes and cancer to show for our efforts. Grains are the unifying theory related to obesity, and by extension, the American diet. Interestingly, we eat more grain products than anybody else on the planet. And that’s why were the fattest. Yes $1 trillion worth of advertising does have its effect and it is hard to resist constant bombardment with images of cookies, cakes candies, crackers and chips confections cokes and crap. (The killer C diet). I too have a Pavlovian response to commercials with pizza or hamburgers. But we as a nation and the workforce I wish to represent must stand up and say no. Wheat in the form of bread, bagels, muffins and cereal is just another form of carbohydrates, basically means sugar. This is the culprit that’s killing us, destroying our health, aging our workforce and society much faster than need be. Corn by the way is a grain. Barley, oats, rye and rice also are grains, and in spite of what are government, your FDA, the large corporations, farmers and the food pyramid say about wholesome, healthy or fiber- we’re still talking sugar. The body breaks down carbohydrates to basic sugar; sugar raises your blood glucose levels which in turn elevates your insulin and unless you’re exercising while eating all this sweet stuff it will be stored as fat , much of it in the form of triglycerides. Remember the old ”Honey does this dress make my butt look big? Change the word dress to triglycerides and you have a definite yes answer. Unfortunately triglycerides also like to hang out in the arteries around your heart leading to, you guessed it, heart disease. So, next time you look in the mirror and see your big belly and butt-you’re looking at fat from carbohydrates and particularly grains.
Bottom-line. We have to try to eliminate grains and their byproducts from our diets. This is the greatest point made over these last few years when you hear the discussion about paleo or primal eating. Two great books learn more on this subject are The Primal Blueprint by Mark Sisson and Paleo Solution by Robb Wolf.
